The Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme started on July 1st, 1916 and lasted until November 13th,1916. For many people, the Battle of the Somme represented the horrors of warfare in WWI. On the Western Front, for five days before the battle, the British army had shot at the German trenches to destroy them and the barbed wire. On July 1st, the British Generals told all of the soldiers to get out of their trenches and walk slowly towards the German trenches.Unlike other commanders, using his talent of tactics, Currie did not think full frontal assault would work. This decision proved to be fatal when the German line had not been weakened and the Germans could see them coming. It was considered to be the worst battle of the WW1 for the British with over 60,000 casualties in the first day and over 350,000 by the end of the battle.
