Sir Arthur Currie in World War I

When the war began in 1914, Sir Arthur Currie was sent to Europe. Sam Hughes offered Arthur Currie a commanding position in the 2nd Brigade. This was because Sir Arthur Currie was Sam’s son’s commanding officer. Currie's promotion to Brigadier-General was confirmed on September 29th, 1914. Arthur was the first Canadian General in WWI. During the war, Sir Arthur Currie achieved the roles of commander over the First Canadian Division and the Canadian Corps. Arthur helped lead Canada to victory at the Second Battle of Ypres, The Battle of Somme, Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. He refused to let troops go to war without thorough preparation because unlike most Generals, Sir Arthur Currie cared a great deal about the soldiers and keeping them alive.
